Hiking Through Epic Limestone Outcrops at Bethany Falls Trail

The Bethany Falls Trail is a picturesque escape into a lush and shaded forest. Located in Blue Springs, MO, about 20 miles outside of Kansas City, the trail offers a convenient getaway from the urban sprawl of the metro area. The trail is one of many within the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area.

The trail begins with a short trip over a wooden bridge that serves and the entrance and exit to the trail. It then veers left to begin the journey around the looped portion of the trail.  Along the way, you'll encounter some beautiful greenery, inland forest, and an overlook of Burr Oak Creek.  Wild violets are prevalent along the trail from around April to June.

From this point, you will encounter a shallow natural stairway.  While it requires some exertion, it is an easy stairway to navigate and leads to one of the most captivating parts of the trail.

Of all the trails within the Burr Oak Conservation Area, the Bethany Falls Trail is easily the most diverse and scenic.  This is due to the magnificent limestone outcrops--some of the largest I've discovered in the Kansas City area.  The trail meanders alongside the moss-covered limestone outcrops, and occasionally passes between them.  The journey evokes in me both a feeling of awe and a whimsical adventurous spirit reminiscent of being a child at the playground.

Just past the limestone corridor, the forest will briefly end and you'll be treated to a view of some of the park's wild grasslands before diving right back under the shaded forest canopy for the remainder of the hike.

Bethany Falls Trail Rating

The Bethany Falls Trail is one of my favorite trails to visit over and over again in the Kansas City metro area.  It is distant enough from the hustle and bustle of city activity to provide a calming a serene natural atmosphere.  The trails are covered in a raised bed of finely crushed gravel which makes them easy on my feet and remarkably resistant to mud after the rain.

While the trail's beauty is unparalleled compared to the rest of the park, it inevitably attracts the largest population of visitors as well.  Your best chance to avoid the crowds is by waking up and hitting the trail early while the sun is still rising and the air is cool and crisp.

Due to its ease of travel, close proximity to the metro area, well maintained paths, and serene natural setting, Bethany Fall Trail is easily one of the best short hiking trails in Kansas City.
